Understanding the Updated TOEFL iBT Reading Section (2026)
The TOEFL iBT Reading section has undergone a significant transformation to better measure academic and real-life proficiency. It has moved away from traditional long-form passages toward a more agile, multistage adaptive format.
1. New Test Structure & Format
The updated section is designed to be faster and more responsive to your skill level:
- Adaptive Design: The section consists of two modules. Your performance in the first "Routing Module" determines if you receive the "Hard" or "Easy" path in the second module, allowing for a more accurate assessment.
- Timing & Items: You will have approximately 27–30 minutes to complete between 35–48 items.
2. The Three New Task Types
| Task Type | Description | Skills Tested |
|---|---|---|
| Complete the Words | A short academic paragraph (~70–100 words) where every other word is partially missing; you must fill in the correct letters. | Vocabulary, spelling, context. |
| Read in Daily Life | Short, practical texts (15–150 words) like emails, menus, or notices. | Scanning, purpose identification. |
| Read an Academic Passage | Concise university-level passage (~200 words) with multiple-choice questions. | Main ideas, details, inference. |
Preparation Strategies
- Vocabulary Accuracy: For "Complete the Words," practice word forms and spelling to handle the completion task efficiently.
- Practical Scanning: For "Read in Daily Life," prioritize reading the question first, then scan the text specifically for dates, names, or instructions.
- Active Reading: Since the academic passages are now more concise (200 words), focus on identifying the author's primary argument and supporting evidence quickly rather than skimming.
