Etymology
Yami means "darkness" in Japanese. In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, it is called the Dark-Dark Fruit.
Appearance
The Yami Yami no Mi is a large, round, light purple fruit made up of many small teardrop-shaped components with swirl patterns, and green leaves sprouting from the top. Its overall shape and appearance closely resembles a pineapple or a bunch of oversized and teardrop-shaped grapes.
Strengths
"Darkness is gravity! A darkness so dense it sucks in everything... even light! Infinite gravity." — Marshall D. Teach
The first and foremost strength, as demonstrated by Blackbeard, is that it allows the user to control darkness and its unique property of gravity. The darkness is visually demonstrated by a black smoke-like substance spreading out from the user's body. The darkness is a void that devours and crushes everything. Due to this, the user can absorb physical matter and attacks of any type by sucking them into the darkness. The user can also use this ability to irresistibly pull the opponent to them, regardless of their current state.
Similar to a black hole, the user can absorb things inside a vortex. Living beings who are absorbed seem to be able to survive being absorbed and expelled but become heavily wounded and left in shock by the experience.
In addition to the previous abilities, this fruit has one unique and frightening ability: the ability to absorb and completely nullify the powers of other Devil Fruit users by simply touching them. All types—be it Paramecia, Zoan, or Logia—can be negated through contact, making the user a natural enemy to all other Devil Fruit users.
Weaknesses
The major strength of this particular fruit—the darkness that swallows up everything—is also its major weakness. Normally, Logia fruits allow the user to disperse, reform, or regenerate, making them intangible. Because the darkness absorbs attacks, the Yami Yami no Mi does not allow the user to become intangible, and any hit the user takes hurts much worse than normal.
While the fruit's ability to nullify Devil Fruit abilities is powerful, the user must actually touch and remain in contact with the victim for the effects to remain constant. Other than that, the user is also affected by the standard Devil Fruit weaknesses (seawater and seastone).
Usage
The fruit's bestowed powers have been used mostly for combat purposes. Blackbeard has two main methods of usage:
- Spreading his darkness throughout the ground, entrapping his targets, absorbing them with extreme crushing force, and regurgitating the remaining debris.
- Combining Devil Fruit nullification with gravity's attraction force to pull long-ranged targets into his grasp for a finishing blow.
Techniques
- Black Hole (Burakku Hōru): Blackbeard spreads his darkness over a large area and swallows up anything he chooses, subjecting targets to intense gravity and crushing them.
- Liberation (Ribereishon): Used following Black Hole, Blackbeard expels all of the destroyed remains of what his darkness had swallowed up at once.
- Kurouzu (Dark Water / Black Vortex): Extending one arm towards his opponent, Blackbeard activates the gravity power of his darkness to pull them into his grasp.
Non-Canon Techniques
- Black World: Covers the area surrounding the opponent in darkness, blocking their vision.
- Yamiagari (Dark Opening): Draws surrounding enemies into a pool of darkness before ejecting them for heavy damage.
- Dark Matter (Pitch Black Star): Creates a big ball of darkness and throws it at the opponent for massive knockback.
- Black Road: A movable, smaller version of Black Hole used to target specific enemies.
History
Decades ago, Marshall D. Teach read about the Yami Yami no Mi in the Devil Fruit Encyclopedia and hunted for it, joining the Whitebeard Pirates to increase his chances. When Commander Thatch of the 4th division found the fruit, Teach recognized it, murdered Thatch to take it, and fled.
Trivia
- This is the first Logia-type Devil Fruit that was seen before consumption.
- Unlike other Logia fruits representing matter or energy, darkness is abstract (the absence of light) and lacks physicality, preventing the user from accessing a standard elemental state.
- The fruit's manipulation of gravity is heavily based on the real-life astrophysical concept of a black hole.
