GoldStar rebranded to LG Electronics on January 1, 1995, as part of a global strategy to streamline the company's identity and compete internationally.
■ Key Timeline of the Rebrand
- 1958 Koo In-hwoi founded GoldStar Co., Ltd. as an electronics subsidiary of Lak-Hui (pronounced "Lucky") Chemical Industrial Corp. GoldStar manufactured South Korea's first domestic radios, TVs, refrigerators, and washing machines.
- 1983 The parent conglomerate consolidated its electronics, consumer goods, and chemical operations under the corporate umbrella Lucky-Goldstar.
- 1995 Chairman Koo Cha-kyung officially shortened the conglomerate's name to LG (taking "L" from Lucky and "G" from GoldStar) to modernize the brand for overseas expansion, accompanied by the slogan "Life's Good".
