What is Google Sites?
Google Sites is a structured web page creation tool offered by Google as part of the Google Workspace productivity suite. It is designed to be user-friendly, allowing anyone to build clean, responsive websites without needing any coding or advanced technical skills.
History
- XYZ [*hidden] Acquisition (2006): Google Sites originated as XYZ [*hidden], an enterprise social software company. Google acquired the platform in October 2006.
- Launch of Google Sites (2008): In February 2008, Google rebranded the technology and officially launched it as Google Sites, initially available to Google Apps users before opening to the public for free later that year.
- The "New" Google Sites (2016): Google completely rebuilt the platform from the ground up in late 2016. The modern version introduced a drag-and-drop interface, mobile-responsive layouts, and deep integration with Google Drive.
- Classic Sites Sunset (2020–2023): Google formally phased out the original ("Classic") Sites interface, migrating all remaining active user sites to the modernized platform.
Key Features
- Drag-and-Drop Editor: Easily add text, images, buttons, and embeds by simply dragging elements onto the page.
- Google Workspace Integration: Seamlessly embed Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Calendars, and Google Maps directly into your web pages.
- Real-Time Collaboration: Just like Google Docs, multiple people can work on editing a site at the same time.
- Responsive Design: Sites automatically adjust to look great on desktops, tablets, and smartphones.
- Free Hosting: Google provides free hosting, and you can connect a custom domain (like
[www.yourname.com](https://www.yourname.com)) if you own one.
