The term "celestial lightning" generally refers to electrical phenomena that take place far above standard cloud-to-ground thunderbolts. In science, these fall under two main categories: Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) occurring in Earth's upper atmosphere, and Astrophysical Discharges happening across the solar system and galaxy.
Earth's Upper Atmospheric Discharges (TLEs)
Rather than hot channels of electricity, high-altitude discharges are cold plasma phenomena triggered by powerful thunderstorms below:
- Red Sprites: Massive, root-like flashes of red-orange light that trigger in the mesosphere (50–90 km high) directly above strong ground-strike lightning.
- Blue Jets & Gigantic Jets: Narrow cones of blue light that burst upward directly from thundercloud tops toward the ionosphere, reaching up to 70 km into the sky.
- ELVES: Rapidly expanding horizontal rings of light stretching up to 400 km wide at the base of the ionosphere, caused by electromagnetic pulses from ground strikes.
