Assimilation vs. Acculturation
Assimilation and acculturation are both processes of cultural change that occur when different cultural groups come into contact. However, they differ fundamentally in the extent to which the original culture is preserved.
Assimilation involves the gradual or complete replacement of an individual's or group's original culture with a new dominant culture, resulting in the loss of many or all original cultural characteristics. In contrast, acculturation enables individuals or groups to adopt selected elements of another culture—such as language, customs, or social practices—while continuing to maintain their own cultural identity, traditions, and values.
