The Intel Pentium family evolved through several major generations before reaching the highly popular Pentium 4 era.

Many people in the early 2000s considered Pentium 4 the "ultimate" Pentium because it achieved very high GHz numbers compared to its predecessors. Systems branded with "Pentium 4" became strongly associated with powerful home PCs of that era.
