A DisplayLink adapter allows an Android phone to display its screen on a TV or monitor using USB only, even if the phone does NOT support USB-C video output (DisplayPort Alt-Mode).
Does a DisplayLink Adapter Work by Itself?
No. A DisplayLink adapter always requires an additional Android app. The hardware alone cannot output video.
You must install the official Android application:
- DisplayLink Presenter
Without this app:
- The TV or monitor will show a black screen
- The adapter will not output video
- The USB connection works only as data, not display
How DisplayLink Works (Step by Step)
1. Android renders the screen using software
2. The DisplayLink app captures the screen
3. The screen image is compressed (CPU/GPU load)
4. Compressed data is sent over USB
5. The adapter decodes the data into video
6. HDMI output is sent to the TV or monitor
Because of this process, DisplayLink is not native video output.
Why DisplayLink Has Limitations
- Higher battery consumption
- Noticeable latency
- Not suitable for gaming
- Video playback may be choppy
What DisplayLink Is Good For
- Presentations (PowerPoint, slides)
- Documents and spreadsheets
- Static dashboards
- Office or productivity tasks
What DisplayLink Is NOT Good For
- Gaming
- Fast video playback
- DRM-protected apps (Netflix, Disney+, etc.)
- Real-time screen mirroring
Key Difference Reminder
DisplayLink is a software-based USB display solution and always requires an Android app.
If your phone supports native USB-C video (DisplayPort Alt-Mode), a USB-C dock or adapter is a better solution because it does not require any app.
